Contacting firm you have interview with

Is it Kosher to contact an alum at a firm you have an interview with to discuss things like which practice areas are busy, advice on interviewing, etc. Or if I have an interview with a firm should I just not bother them until the interview?

I think it's absolutely fine to contact alums who work there.

As a practical matter, only by talking to actual attorneys is it possible to get a sense of a firm beyond the marketing material on a website.

This is a great idea and certainly encouraged. Firms love when you do your research and will appreciate that you were proactive in seeking out info, and the contact you make might get in touch with the recruiter to put in a good word.
