Getting a 1L SA from...... Brooklyn Law School
I know, I know- it is extraordinarily unlikely. I get that.
But humor me and consider the following things.
I am going to be at BLS in the fall
I do have close relationships with partners at a V50 and a few midsize firms in NYC.
Say (hypothetically) my grades are stellar. (I know this will draw disdain from TLSers, please just keep in mind this is hypothetical I am not assuming anything)
What MUST I do to have a shot at getting a 1L gig. Does it come down to working the connections and that's it? Must I do everything I can to apply early? I understand its an absurd reach, but I will make a run at it. So I might as well have as much info as I can. Thanks.

LOL@ this thread. Not to be mean or anything, people at t10s who have good relationships with partners don't get 1L SAs. Apply, but don't expect anything.

1. Talk to the people you know at the firms to let them know you're interested in them and what their firm does. Maybe do a lunch or coffee with them.
2. Send you resume in Dec. 1. Make sure your cover letter is really good.
3. Update with your grades when you get them.
4. Await rejections.

You'll be lucky if you get a 2L SA position from that school.

i got a 1L SA from BLS. my resume was bomb post law school and i applied december 1st, and i was lucky. you probably will not get one. but for 2L, it isnt as dismal as everyone is making it. there are a good number of firms coming to OCI this year (more than last year) and I know plenty of people who got hired last year as well. be in the top 15% w/ journal or top 10% without, of course.

A good friend of mine obtained a paid in-house position with a chief corporate counsel’s office in Dallas for his 1L summer. He is in the top 15% @ Southern.
It can be done.

I have my eye on this, so cut the crap, people. I am sure the OP knows the odds. Is it possible you can do this? Yes. However, it is exceedingly unlikely, and your time would be better spent focusing on your finals in early December, then applying for judicial positions or government or nonprofit summer work. If you need to be paid, apply for a stipend through your school, which is what I did my first summer when I had a public service grant. Good luck!

SMU's not the same as BLS, though, despite the USNWR rankings; SMU's status/ranking in Dallas is more akin to Fordham's in NYCAnonymous User wrote:A good friend of mine obtained a paid in-house position with a chief corporate counsel’s office in Dallas for his 1L summer. The further down in the rankings you go, the more it makes sense to target RA positions with professors at your school.
They pay well, are respectable enough on a resume, and the fact that every law school hires their own people takes the law school prestige element out of the game.
A true 1L SA is not going to happen, and I am not just being a dick. I could see you getting a paid internship (which they may call a "summer associate" job) at a firm, though, which could be a valuable experience.

Given that step 1 is 'outperform 99% of your classmates,' step 2 doesn't matter.
