Least grade selective v15 firms?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jul 04, 2011 12:04 pm

Below median at HYS, but am going to bid on a few v15 firms just because of their huge class sizes. Any suggestions on which are less grade selective and more personality selective? No significant WE if that matters.

Skadden and Weil, probably. If GDC is V15 (I don't really keep track) it's NYC office would probably make the list. Potentially Covington's as well, though I've never actually looked into it, I just know their DC office is more popular so it's plausible their NYC office is less selective.

Weil, Skadden, Paul Weiss, and GDC NY are your best bets. Covington NY is a good notch above them in selectivity. Kirkland is worth a bid since it seems like they sometimes step out the grading standards for particiular people. Same with Cleary, and to a lesser extent Simpson and Debevoise.

Covington NY is incredibly selective. They have only four or five SAs this year. The DC office gets more attention but also hires many more people.

Duly noted, that makes sense. I've also heard it's one of the most gorgeous offices in the city...

Eh it's the NYTimes building. And that in and of itself, as a "brand new" building, enhances things. But I think there are nicer offices in the city.

Yea but how many people get to see Image

when they walk into work every day? That's worth something (on top of your exorbitant salary).

I don't really care for it. And the location sucks too.

I don't think the economy is quite good enough yet for us to be too picky about the firm's facilities.

I don't see that when I walk to work. You only see that if you're coming out of the Port Authority. Most people making an exorbitant salary don't take the bus to work. They take the subway to Times Square and go in through the side of the building without ever seeing the front.

It is nice on the inside, but that depends on which law firm you're visiting. They each have their own interior design.

That's such an interesting point. I never realized a discussion on facilities meant we were being picky about them. The things you learn!

At least from UVA, Paul Weiss is pretty selective. None of their callbacks last year went to students with GPAs below a 3.6 (slightly above top 15%). The only other firms that didn't dip below that level last year, 3.6, were Boies, SullCrom, and Cravath. (This is all for NYC).

At my school, median callback GPA at DPW ~= S&C > Cleary ~= STB ~= Skadden. Might be different at CLS/NYU.

Paul Weiss is snobby about the non HYSCCN schools.

Hmm. I wonder why CSO doesn't trust the students with revealing GPA information...

Lol @ "revealing." I posted it because it's helpful for other students -- tell me how it harms UVa.

The argument is that it can cause firms to increase their selectively if they feel they're underselective relative to their peers. I don't really buy it. I think they're mostly as grade selective as they can be / want to be.

Yeah, they've regularly offered people well beyond the top third and below median at my T6.

Speaking of firm facilities, does anyone know of a way to find pics of various firms' offices in NY? How does everyone know "oh that place is in a nice new building" or "has gorgeous facilities" besides just visiting the place?

i've tried various avenues to check out the firms' pads such as google image search and flickr, but haven't found much. any ideas? firms' websites generally have little to offer.
