Paul Hastings Chicago
Anyone go to the Paul Hastings reception in Chicago tonight? What'd you think about it?

Gotta love an anonymous user telling others to abuse the anonymous feature (even though I grant you that it's probably appropriate in this case).

Any word on class size for next year? They only had 3 last year and it still says TBD on NALP for this year.

Considering it says they gave 5 out of 6 offers last year, I don't think your statement is quite accurate...t-pain wrote:Any word on class size for next year? They only had 3 last year and it still says TBD on NALP for this year.

They have 6 this year and the hiring partner said they're looking to almost double the size of the office (from 60 attorneys to over 100) within the next few years, so I'd expect summer class sizes to rise, too.

You're right about the total number, but they did have only 3 2L SAs last year.Sup Kid wrote:Considering it says they gave 5 out of 6 offers last year, I don't think your statement is quite accurate...t-pain wrote:Any word on class size for next year? Re: Paul Hastings Chicago
what is PH's rep like in chicago and elsewhere? i think in my market they have a reputation as a sweatshop and that people are underpaid relative to hours/market and don't like working there...

Re: Paul Hastings Chicago
There rep is pretty decent in Chicago as a corporate/labor firm (tiny lit dept). Everyone there talked about "no face time" requirements and comfortable work-life balance. Some of it sounded a little rehearsed, though, so I have minor doubts. Overall, it seems like people are genuinely happy there. (I talked to a mix of current SAs, associates, and partners.)

So no one else from TLS was there? I'm surprised! It was explicitly for the top 10% of students!

Re: Paul Hastings Chicago
There were enough people from my section there that it would have been mathematically impossible for all of them to be in the top 10%. I think some people disregarded that requirement.Anonymous User wrote:So no one else from TLS was there? I'm surprised! It was explicitly for the top 10% of students!

Re: Paul Hastings Chicago
After the reception I'm a little worried that the firm is out of reach if you're not at a T14. All of this summers class was T14. There were a lot of Notre Dame and UIUC people there but the firm barely has anyone from those schools. Only three Notre Dame partners and two UIUC partners. No associates.
I know they said the Chicago office was planning on expanding, do you think that means they are going to start hiring outside of Chicago/Michigan/Northwestern?

Re: Paul Hastings Chicago
I know they are at our OCI this year, but I looked through and noticed they didn't have much of an NDLS presense so I was planning on bidding them fairly low...hopefully the expansion does occur. I couldn't make it to the reception unfortunately. I'm not sure how many years they've been coming to our OCI. Are they at UIUC as well?Anonymous User wrote:After the reception I'm a little worried that the firm is out of reach if you're not at a T14. All of this summers class was T14. We wouldn't be able to go if that were the case with no idea of what the top 10% cutoff is.flcath wrote:My invite did not say anything about top 10%.Anonymous User wrote:So no one else from TLS was there? I'm surprised! It was explicitly for the top 10% of students!

Re: Paul Hastings Chicago
It would seem odd that the solution to that would be to leave the top 10% stipulation on every other school, and NO stipulation on ND. Just say "3.5 or higher" or whatever.ndirish2010 wrote:We wouldn't be able to go if that were the case with no idea of what the top 10% cutoff is.flcath wrote:My invite did not say anything about top 10%.Anonymous User wrote:So no one else from TLS was there? Or just say top 10% and ppl would get the point, just like they will with OCI bidding. It's not like there were grade-bouncers at the door who examine your transcript with a flashlight prior to giving you your wristband.

They had at least one summer from Notre Dame last year.Anonymous User wrote:After the reception I'm a little worried that the firm is out of reach if you're not at a T14. He discussed expanding the size of the office through lateral hiring and snaking partners (and associates). But I am pretty sure that the summer class is likely to stay about the same size.Anonymous User wrote:They have 6 this year and the hiring partner said they're looking to almost double the size of the office (from 60 attorneys to over 100) within the next few years, so I'd expect summer class sizes to rise, too.

This past year they had 7 SAs, one of which was a 1L/2L. They all received offers (in the 1L/2L's case, its an offer to revisit).

How is Paul Hastings thought of in Chicago? More generally, how are small offices of large V30 firms thought of in Chi/La/other large, non-NY markets?

PH in Chicago is a newer office that a few Kirkland people broke off to form. They're probably similar to Katten when it comes to prestige.Anonymous User wrote:How is Paul Hastings thought of in Chicago?
