Grand Rapids has some decent sized firms and has a far better QOL than Detroit (though of course there are nice areas outside Detroit to live).

Having lived in both Minneapolis and Madison, I'm gonna give the edge to Minneapolis. It's bigger and the culture scene is better. Madison is awesome as well, but it's smaller and more insular and the rest of Wisconsin is filled with binge drinking backwoods folk and everyone is way too obsessed with the Packers. Plus Milwaukee is gross. Minnesota is just a better state. Minneapolis is killer, especially in the summer. It is an awesome place to be. I've never been to Detroit outside the airport but I mean come on, Detroit?
sorry, I guess you were asking about Milwaukee over Madison. I'll reiterate - unless you looooooove drinking, Milwaukee is meh.

I'm working in Detroit this summer and it's actually pretty fantastic. Attorneys at my firm seem to have excellent quality of life - I've been told by both partners and associates that the expectation is 10 hour days on average. There are plenty of nice places to live - Oakland County is one of the most affluent in the country and there are also up and coming neighborhoods in midtown etc right by where the law offices are.
However I have my doubts about whether interest will be enough. Everyone I've met is from metro Detroit or married someone here.
But good luck. Detroit kicks Grand Rapids' ass by the way, especially if you're concerned about diversity.

How many people do you think have lived in all three states? You are going to get guesses based on stereotypes mostly.BackToTheOldHouse wrote:Thanks for the votes and responses, but come on TLS, we can do better than 13 votes and 4 replies!

Wisconsin is amazing. How can you not love a state whose economy revolved around water parks, cheese and beer???
Madison and Milwaukee are both adorable cities (though a little small for my taste). And Milwaukee has sports teams, good museums, is on the lake, and has things like Summerfest. I give it two thumbs up.

I've lived in both Madison and the Twin Cities and couldn't agree more with Paulina's post. Madison is an awesome place, but it's first and foremost a college town. Mpls, especially the way it's continued to grow in the last decade, is one of the absolute best cities in the country assuming (and this is definitely a big assumption) you can handle the winter.
