How do graduates of these schools fare? Forum

Hello,

I understand that graduates of non-elite law schools have a lesser chance of securing BigLaw and other high paying legal jobs compared to graduates of elite schools. Still, most top firms recruit some TT and TTT graduates every year.

I would like to know how TT/TTT graduates fare at top firms. Are they treated equally to all the T6 graduates or are they relegated to some lesser rank? What is the attrition rate for attorneys from lesser ranked schools? Are TT/TTT grads able to compete successfully with lawyers from the elite schools? Or are they assumed to be not as good? Basically, how much does school rank matter once you're at biglaw?

Full disclosure, I'm just a summer associate. That said, once at a firm, it doesn't seem to matter where you went to school -- the main things are the quality of work you do, the number of hours you work/bill, and your personality while working with others. However, once you try to leave biglaw for another firm/in-house counsel/DA/USAO/etc, your school, depending on how low in the rankings it is, may auto-ding you. Many jobs have so many resumes coming in that to help shorten the stack they automatically reject any school below a certain threshold.

I can only answer from the experience I've had at my firm, but nobody cares what LS someone went to, as long as they do their work proficiently. While most (almost all) associates and partners are from T10 schools, there are a few from T2 and TTT schools, including some important partners.

Basically, school rank is a huge part of getting in to Biglaw, but if you make it in, no one cares as long as you kick ass while you're at the firm.

Generally you will have to be top 1-2% at a TT/TTT to land a big firm. This is really not realistic, if you want biglaw go to a T14.

There are TT where the biglaw cutoff is top 10%. I'm sure there are TT/TTT where cutoff is, as you say, top 1-2%.

So, depends on the school.
