I'd wager a guess the person you overheard meant "BigLaw" (or similar firms that recruit from top schools) when referring to "legal work".

I have no comment on Vanderbilt in particular, but I have seen discrepancies between what US News career data reports and what some law schools claim on their websites. By discrepancies, I don't mean anything minor; I mean the US News data says 80+% reported their salaries and the schools says less than 100 people reported their salaries.

Maybe the original source was just looking at the NLJ numbers and assumed they came across privileged info...
