People are not elevated to partnership based on law school but rather how good of a lawyer they are and their ability to bring in clients. Law school as a variable on its own has absolutely no weight in partner elevation.kublaikahn wrote:NYC is the greatest city on earth. People who disagree can generally be found camping along a mosquito infested lake in the summer time. I know, judgmental as all get out.Renzo wrote:Psssh. Now, the subways stairs, that's a different matter...
I want to throw this out for discussion and advice. I have a friend who is a partner in a large firm and says that many of the shops in NYC (disclaimer:he worked in NYC but he's a CA guy) will pay well but have a very narrow track to partnership. They intend for most of their hires to leave by design and thus will grind you but not shape you. The few that they will move up are HYSCN or locally connected (you can read into that as you choose) He told me this when I suggested I trade down to Fordham. Your thoughts?

Oh, you weren't joking. So you think that the fact that lawyers like New York leads to New York being the largest legal market? That's fucking hilarious.jdhopeful14 wrote:What does the fact that a market already exists have to do with "job creation"?jdhopeful14 wrote:

The answer? They don't, it just seems like that because it is the largest market.
The amount of people that seem to 'favor' other markets over NYC is probably directly proportional to the size of those markets in comparison to NYC.
Uhhhhhhhh.....maybe it's the largest market because people favor it.
I really hope this is a joke and my sarcasm meter isn't working tonight.
Recent grad desires --> job creation? Yeah fucking right.
Stop equivocating as to the word "market".
I'm sure it doesn't have to do with New York being the financial capital of the world (shut up, London). Or New York housing 42 Fortune 500 company headquarters. Or the 8+ million people living in New York.
No, the New York legal market, part of the legal services industry, is instead so dominant in the U.S. because lawyers favor New York over such backwaters as Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and Houston.

You gotta love New York. Where else on Earth can you find a 12 million strong circle jerk? It's clearly one of the great cities of the world, yet it is the only one that constantly has to convince and remind itself that it really is. Why the inferiority complex?AlanShoreDisciple wrote:It's New York City.
Anyway, it's favored because it has the most jobs.

Ok, there's no doubt that New Yorkers are some egotistical sons of bitches. But you have never been to Boston. The arrogance in that city is suffocating.sundance95 wrote:You gotta love New York. Yes, lawyers favor nyc precisely for the reasons you stated. And that leads to nyc being the largest market.Oh, you weren't joking. So you think that the fact that lawyers like New York leads to New York being the largest legal market? That's fucking hilarious.

Re: Why do people favor NYC firms?
NYC isn't the largest legal market b/c lawyers prefer it. Lawyers will go anywhere that'll give them a job and a chance to pay off their crushing student loans. NYC is the largest legal market b/c:
a) Corporate law greatly jacks up the body count of the legal profession;
b) The financial services firms for which corporate lawyers do bitch work are located, by historical circumstance*, in NYC.
*) NYC's position as a major harbor and commercial hub for hundreds of years.

A standard living space with that view is like 4-5 million bucks. I doubt there are very many lawyers who can afford a 4-5 million dollar apartment.PKSebben wrote:The tippy top partners at my firm that actually live in new york do not have park views.sundance95 wrote:Can any but the most successful lawyers hope to have this?
