Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
Some people did split summers (have no information on how many).
V10 : 26
V20 : 51
V50 : 80
V100: 118
Total SA positions: 156
Based on summer employment, Duke's graduating classes disperse all over the nation. Many other employment positions on the list got market in their area (or at least six figure salary) even though the firm does not appear in the Vault rankings.
I did not write the percentage because I do not know the size of Duke Law 2012.
If you have questions or want more specific rather than general data, let me know.
Enjoy.

Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
Is it just me or are those numbers really good?
Not sure of class size for 2012, but 2013 has 240. Cite: http://www.law.duke.edu/news/story?id=5479&u=11
How many would be a good estimate for splitting summers? I always thought it was rare to split 2L summer since so many people advise against it.
Finally, do you have any numbers on GPA? Ideally it would be something like what percentage of median students got a v100 SA

Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
I do not have any information on how many summers were split. I also do not have any information on the GPAs of the students who got the various SA positions.
I do think that these numbers are quite good. I believe it is due to the wide range of markets targeted by Duke Law students.
Here is the geographic distribution of the Duke Law Class of 2013.
- Mid-Atlantic: 25%
- West: 20%
- Midwest: 19%
- South: 17%
- Northeast: 15%
- Foreign: 4%
That may help explain why so many different markets are desired upon graduation.

Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
Slight semantical correction: there were more positions offered in the two markets noted above, than were actually accepted. I know people who had offers in both CA and TX who turned them down to go elsewhere.
What would make for a really interesting comparison would be the TOTAL number of offers by market (or firm) given to C/O 2012, versus that of C/O 2011 and 2010. OCS has those numbers, but they don't publish them, unfortunately.

Anecdotally, I know of a decent number of 1Ls who snagged firm jobs this summer, as well. Most are in secondary and smaller markets.

Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
These numbers look fantastic. I wanna say the class of 2012 was ~220 students (class of 2013 was over-enrolled), though I could be wrong (or the number could be different with transfers). Either way, this is great news- and these stats will hopefully continue to improve as the legal market recovers.
Thanks for the info, OP.

Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
These numbers are very good except if a lot of people did split summers. I do not know how prevalent split summers are. Here's to hoping these numbers are just as good for the class of 2014! I want Duke to get me a job!beachbum wrote:These numbers look fantastic. Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
There were 34 total SA positions accepted by Duke students in DC.
* V10 : 5
* V20 : 17
* V50 : 23
* V100 : 30
There were four non-Vault firms reported.
That is approximately 12.5% of the Class of 2012 in V100 firms in DC.
In 2006, 11.1% of Duke's class was in V100 firms in DC.
There were 39 total SA positions accepted by Duke students in NYC.
* V10 : 16
* V20 : 21
* V50 : 28
* V100 : 37
There were two non-Vault firms reported (one was midlaw and the other paid market).
That is approximately 15.4% of the Class of 2012 in V100 firms in NYC.
In 2006, 19.6% of Duke's summering class was in V100 firms in NYC.
Note: Assuming class size of 240 students and not considering splits in percentages

Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
Thanks again for doing this, OP. I may have missed this somewhere, but how did you get these numbers? Are they available to all admitted students?
Also, it looks like the Class of 2012 has (or started with, anyway) 228 students: http://www.law.duke.edu/news/story?id=3857&u=10

Re: Duke Class of 2012 Summer Employment
Are these statistics good? It is hard to feel good or bad about this data due to a lack of information regarding split-summers.
Also, current 1Ls, what is the feeling for upcoming OCI?
