What would be unlawful about insulting someone else, even anonymously?

no if the email account was anonymous then no and even if it wasn't if no formal notice/communication was addressed to you then you had no knowledge of it.

I would say it is freedom of speech, you are allowed your opinions. I think that if you did not get into any kind of trouble then it is not something you need to report.

Re: need to disclose this on bar application?
Suspicion of harassment which cannot be proven without your confession unless a witness was present & has not resulted in any formal accusation, charge or punishment is not worthy of disclosure. Regardless, this is more of an exercise of your free speech rights than it is any type of rules violation.
