1L summer at Legal Aid Society okay for biglaw SA desire? Forum

I am wondering if working for legal aid society for my 1L will hinder my chances for Summer associate for my 2L.
any insights?

since everyone agrees that it cant hurt, i guess ill ask it in a different context: will working at legal aid in any circumstance help me get biglaw for 2L summer in any way?

Depends on what you actually do. If you work directly with clients and manage to get in court, it will be an asset. It's not really going to turn heads on a resume, but could be useful for an interview.

Having a legal aid 1L summer job will help you gain a 2L SA position because it will provide you with work experience, resume material, and talking points during your 2L SA interviews. However, based on comments on these forums, any legal job is sufficient.

With that said, a 1L SA position will probably look better than a legal aid 1L summer job. However, most 2L SA's don't get 1L SA's, so as long as your grades/school are good you should be good for a 2L SA position.

Summary: 1L Legal Aid job is good, but 1L firm job is probably slightly better. Difference is minor and important thing is having a 1L summer job that is law related and preferrably substantive.

1L job is about talking points for a 2L job search. It is about gaining experience and whether it is PI, biglaw, or shitlaw, if you can show you are interested in being a lawyer you are good to go.

Bottom line: if you have options, take the $$$.
