Re: "Judicial Extern" for State Court of Appeals
Like the vast majority of 1L positions, this position will neither help nor hurt your ability to get screening interviews. In the actual interview, it will help you to the extent that you can intelligently talk about it.

This is 100% correct. Also note that while you may not yet realize it, many, many 1Ls will be doing judicial internships (it's more common than working at a firm), and no OCI employer will look down on it.2LLLL wrote:Like the vast majority of 1L positions, this position will neither help nor hurt your ability to get screening interviews. State CoA is better than a regular superior court, but yeah, judicial internships are pretty common. Still, it's a good position for a 1L job, don't be down on it.EatABaby wrote:Interesting. For some reason I was under the impression that there was *some* kind of prestige associated with this position. To know that "many, many 1L's" will be doing it really takes away the luster. Thanks for the response, though. I appreciate it.=Also note that while you may not yet realize it, many, many 1Ls will be doing judicial internships (it's more common than working at a firm), and no OCI employer will look down on it.

Re: "Judicial Extern" for State Court of Appeals
I did a state appellate court externship last summer and it was terrific. As far as employment, most posters have it correct in saying that it doesn't help you or hurt you, but provides you with good interview talking points. I'm unsure how employers look at appellate court externships. I know that associates usually put down their externships (and certainly their clerkships if any) if it's on the federal level in their firm profiles.
I've seen some use it for appellate courts but that's been exclusively for clerkships from what I can remember. If there's any prestige between federal and state court externships (above the trial court level) it's very very slight in my opinion.
