I think there are better and more fun things you can do, but this isn't a bad choice. At my school summer RAs were paid, and it certainly didn't cut anyone out of the running for a 2L SA position if they had good grades and some kind of interesting bg or story otherwise. Maybe it can even make you attractive depending on what kind of research you are doing - IE: if a prof at your school is part of the creation of the new restatement of insurance and he wants help researching for that, this could make you look attractive.
