How is it that you are not aware that most public defenders are in court every day? You don't seriously think these people are lounging around the office in Birkenstocks all day, do you? Wearing a suit is not going to "turn anyone off," because everyone you meet will likely be wearing courtroom attire.

Always wear a suit to an interview. Charcoal or navy and make sure it fits properly. Somebody should have told you this sometime around puberty.
