Local biglaw firm is having a reception for 1Ls from my school tomorrow evening. I've never been to one of these before and don't really know what to expect. I'm guessing one or two bored partners and a handful of bored associates who don't want to be there, amirite?

Also, what should I try to do there? They're not hiring 1Ls, so do I just want to get one or two people to remember me for next summer?

We had one that had probably 200 1Ls and probably 60-75 attorneys, ranging from hiring partners to associates. They all seemed really engaged and wanting to be there. I got a lot out of it, but don't know if everyone else feels the same way.

Network, mainly in areas you are interested in, but I found out about an area I had never considered previously and may try and go after now. Find out the path those people took and other information you find interesting. I doubt many will remember you unless you make a large impression solely due to the reception. You can, however, contact them later about any questions you may have had, as long as they are legit.

Try to find out something about the firm that you couldn't discover on their website. Use that in OCI screening interview with them next year. Get callback. ?????. Profit.
