Am I applying for a summer "internship" or "a position as a summer associate?"
The two are the same thing, right? Keep in mind this is for a 1L cover letter, applying to private firms.
Thanks!

You should say summer associate or what ever official title they give.

The two are not the same. Summer Associate is a subcategory of Interns, which can include law clerks, etc.
