If you seek to acquire wealth over the course of your career you shouldn't focus so much on starting salary.

No.TIKITEMBO wrote: This thread is for reporting public interest jobs that pay well (around $80,000 a year starting salary). There must be some that exist, they're just probably not as obsessed over as those for corporate law.

Dude, really, don't focus on starting salary.TIKITEMBO wrote:Yeah of course, the first obligatory snark from people who waste their precious time posting useless comments because they really must down deep inside feel someone gives a shit what they say. You're nothing special.
Of course, they're often followed by people who have legitimate advice, so I'm not worried

True. Think about it OP. You want a career helping poor people? Guess what poor people don't have. Plus, since you are rewarded with that feel good feeling no one will bother paying you more than they have to since the reason you do it is the feel good feeling. In the long run you might be able to find a well paying PI job but it will still be much less than a private sector job of equal prestige and responsibility.eth3n wrote:more like paying PI/gov jobs amirite?

I don't think this is such a crazy thread idea. Assume we all understand the usual caveats--that such positions are insanely competitive, that you shouldn't get into PI if wealth acquisition is truly important to you, etc.--it's still worth having something to work toward!
I'll start: San Francisco Public Defender pays $90K starting (as soon as you pass the bar) and are pretty regular about promotions and raises. They have an opening like once every three years or something crazy, but there you go. Next?

LOL I guess that fits the title of the thread, but kinda depressing as it will clearly be stanford/boalt top person foolish enough to choose public crim defense and/or nepotistic/connection/lateral hire. Is OP looking for an actual position or just doing this for academic purposes?lola_wants wrote:I don't think this is such a crazy thread idea. There are a lot of high paying public interest jobs in international law. You'll have no problem getting one of these jobs as long as you graduate from a tier-2 school or better.

TITCR. I've never met a 1L who told me they were going into "international arbitration." You should look into that.Cavalier wrote:There are a lot of high paying public interest jobs in international law. What if it is tier-3, but US News ranks the International Law program high?Cavalier wrote:There are a lot of high paying public interest jobs in international law. You'll have no problem getting one of these jobs as long as you graduate from a tier-2 school or better.

I'm going to print that post out and put it on my refrigerator.TIKITEMBO wrote:Purely academic. I still have yet to go through this whole lsat/law school thing. Is OP looking for an actual position or just doing this for academic purposes?Just haven't seen much on the potential to make money in PI (or gov). I know alot of people want Big Law here, but I'm just trying to get a good discussion on the other options.
It seems like this will have to be more and more true with the world becoming flatter and flatter. From what I've seen globalization has been and will continue to affect the legal market. United Nations, WTO (many sides to that of course), IMF (again, many sides) and for the U.S. NAFTA and CAFTA. Trade agreements and international governing agencies will probably increase in importance and the decisions that are made for them will of course affect many people. There are a lot of high paying public interest jobs in international law.
