What if partner ecommends you to the hiring committee?

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Sep 18, 2010 6:08 pm

I've had a partner tell me that she was going to recommend me to the hiring committee after a CB but it's by no means a done deal... my question is why not!? I thought partner's recommendation was really all that was needed to get an offer. So what are my chances at this point?

She doesn't know how the rest of you interviews went. It might be good to convene everyone to make sure you handled all of the interviews well.

Also, some firms (e.g. Davis Polk) give offers to very few of the people they call back. Don't immediately assume you'll get an offer just because you didn't screw up your callback.

Finally, I think someone else started a thread about this yesterday?

I guess it has to probably be more than on person's opinion and lots of others might get similar recommendations. Also, grades probably still do matter at the CB stage, it is just that you are not going to be disqualified because of your grades. For example, if they have two guys who are more or less equal in all other respects, but one has better grades, I am guessing they are going to take the guy with better grades.

Because it's not one person's decision.

I had a callback with a family member who was a partner (mom's cousin) who recommended me highly. I didn't get the gig and he called me to apologize and to say that while he did all he could for me, the fact that I was not going into his practice area meant he really didn't have too much influence in the process.

Is he still your mom's cousin?

How did you know you were dinged? Did the firm tell you? Did you learn through osmosis? Did the business cards you received from their attorneys spontaneously combust one afternoon?
