My summer internship with a state court judge did a background check. So I assume at least one state would do so for clerks.

Thanks for that. Do you have any sense what the standards are? Does a criminal conviction make you ineligible? Is the standard higher, lower, or equal to what is needed for the state's character and fitness bar requirements? (I realize it's a longshot that you or anyone else on here would know this).
