I don't know about dinner, but I got a CB from Munger LA. Received the CB offer on 8/12; CB was on 8/23.

3 days after dinner... I am fairly certain that everybody who gets invited to the dinner gets a callback... unless you really screw something up at the dinner

Depends on the school. ~ 88.9% for YLS last year. 8/9.

Bump. Has anyone who interviewed last week heard anything? Do you they contact everyone's references post-cb, or is this a good sign?

Offer roughly a week after cb (despite multiple assurances that they would take at least two weeks). I definitely plan to accept. Anyone else accepting?

when was your cb?? i'm still waiting to hear. did you interview with irell as well? i have an offer from them, and am not exactly sure what the upsides of choosing mto are (irell = bigger bonuses, in century city vs. downtown)...thoughts? mto is definitely more selective, but i'm not sure what that does for me.

First, I think it's a feel/fit/lifestyle thing. Irell will probably be more hours (though I did get the feeling from a couple of associates there that you could keep yourself to a sane number of hours the first couple years). And the people, in my opinion, seem like the hardcore all-law/all-the-time types. There's nothing wrong with that in small doses, but I'd guess you're gonna be looking elsewhere for your after-work socializing. At Munger I got the sense the hours could be a little more humane. But more than that, almost everyone I met had really interesting backgrounds that suggested they had lives/interests outside the office.

On the more objective/work side of the equation, Irell is primarily an IP lit powerhouse (with pretty good securities and entertainment lit groups as well), whereas Munger might be better for a generalist or someone who's not sure they want to go down the IP (or securities) path. Plus, Munger works on those incredible, high-impact pro bono cases (I imagine it takes some angling + some sweet credentials to get involved with those, but...overall it's still a plus for the firm in my mind).

Not to mention the leverage is better at Munger, which means not necessarily that your partnership prospects are great (who really knows what's gonna happen that far out) but that you WILL get huge responsibility on the matters you work on. At Irell I got the feeling that the "early responsibility" thing was more of a crapshoot, or else a function of how many hours you were willing to bill.

+1. Better partnership prospects (50% stay for 20 years, partnership track as short as 5 years), fewer hours, less leverage, and the "collegial" culture basically sealed the deal for me.

Still, I think Irell is a great choice, especially if you want IP or strongly prefer CC (which I too prefer, but not enough). Plus the bonuses are better.

I went with Irell for the summer based mostly on personality fit and culture. Can't really expand on it, just a feeling I got from the people I met. Couldn't really joke around with the people at Munger and just didn't really connect with them like I did at Irell. Other (less impt) factors: century city>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>downtown. Irell's hours have the rep for being tough but you're going to see that anywhere and at Irell you can work from home if you want- no facetime requirement.

Also, don't have any inclination towards IP. I think it would be interesting to do some of the soft stuff and I asked everyone I met with if not having a science background will put me at a disadvantage and they uniformly said no. Alot of them had not even worked on an IP case- I think if you're a general litigator as opposed to IP specialist you're not going to do a lot of IP work, especially if you aren't interested in it, even though that's the outside perception. (But of course, since they're so good at it most people want to do some work in the area).
