can i plan a vacation 1L winter break?

Post by smittytron3k » Wed Jul 21, 2010 10:45 pm

question: my girlfriend and i would like to go to hawaii for a substantial chunk (5+ days) of our winter break. is there a risk that firms or other employers will want to interview me about a 1L position during this time? are these typically phone interviews, or will they want to interview me in person? would like to know/hear from people who have been in this position before i buy tickets etc.

thanks!

Schedule away, at least with regard to that concern, as employers won't likely contact you until later. The other consideration is that you may want part of break to actually get your materials together and send them out, depending on how much you can/can't get done during the semester

I would go ahead and plan your vacation. For myself and most of my classmates, employers tended to interview after the holidays.

+1 for vacation. Send out apps before you leave, go on vacation while you wait to hear back and schedule interviews, come home tan and relaxed, interview, profit.

If you haven't already sent out your materials by winter break, the soup kitchen and debtors prison is ---> that way

Only for firms; 1Ls looking for judicial internships and many public interest placements (perhaps the "other employers" OP mentioned)can send stuff out during break or even later.

Yes. Almost everywhere I applied didn't accept applications until late January or even later. Even when I sent stuff in early they didn't get back to me until Feb/March.

Contrary to popular belief, plenty of people are still searching for jobs in March and April and a lot of places are still hiring.

I know that, I was one of the people still looking in March/April my 1L year. However, OP specifically referenced firms and "other employers," demonstrating that he is most interested in firms. Just sayin'. But yes, I should have been more precise.

I went to Europe over winter break 1L and came back on December 30th. The one firm (V20s) that I applied for a 1LSA at was willing to interview me on the morning of the 31st.
