Dealmaking for the Non-Corporate Minded

Post by Pablo Ramirez » Wed Jul 21, 2010 12:01 am

Hi all,

I really enjoy negotiating, dealmaking and contract drafting, but I don't know if I'll enjoy corporate transactional work in NYC BigLaw. What other types of law/markets do you suppose will suit my interests? Real Estate? Entertainment? Sports? Others?

Thanks for your help!

Everything you mentioned is done by NYC big law.

Poke around chambers and partners, especially their section on practice areas. Sometimes you have to dig deep to figure out the kind of positions that are actually out there and what your role in them would be as an entry level associate.

If you've got a tech background, you might enjoy IP transactional work. I did some IP transactional work as an intern in a tech transfer office last semester, and I've also done a lot of it with my summer firm. It's always interesting (to me at least) because every deal is truly different: you're working with different technologies and sets of patents every time.
