Deferred: what are you doing for temp work in meantime?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Jul 15, 2010 11:03 pm

What are other deferred incoming associates doing in the meantime? Include months off, stipend and work plans.

If you are going to be searching, how do you plan on going about searching for a temporary gig?

I'm studying for the bar, but want to hit the ground running afterward. I have no prospects right now and will need money to live on. Moving home is not an option.

Oh, dude. Why did you wait until July to think about this?

Yes, I'm positive this poster just looked at his watch and went "OH MY GOD, IT'S JULY, I SHOULD BEGIN MY JOB SEARCH NOW. OH I KNOW TLS!"

Well, my reasoning is that if he HAD been looking then he would have a huge list of shit he already ran down. I was also deferred and I posted a thread in here somewhere with the massive list of shit I went after LAST fall.

People that waited until this spring to think about employment got fucked.

I have a temp clerk gig until Jan when my firm is bringing us in. Knock on wood. If you're around school perhaps hit up the school to work in the lib or RA. It's not glamorous, but might be enough to get you buy until you start.

I have decent reasons for waiting, some of them I can't share because it would out me. It has become apparent that I need to get something though. I've laid the base for a few opportunities through contacts, but no guarantee those will come through and I'd like to weigh all options.

Feel free to keep any ridicule to yourself.

ridicule? dude, I am trying to show genuine concern.

Here are some ideas:

1) Go track down some professors who gave you decent grades. Explain your situation. What do they think?

2) Your public service center.

3) Find alumni that would be willing to speak with you about your career.

It would have been much better if you had 5 or 6 months to let these avenues play out a bit...

Voyager, I was not referring to you. Your posts were very constructive and helpful, I truly appreciate it.

Did you use a headhunter, or can you recommend a headhunter? I don't even need to be doing legal work (although obviously preferable). I've got an great job lined up, I just need to pay living expenses for a few months until I start early in 2011.

I'll start working my contacts a bit more too. I hadn't thought of the professor route - thank you for the suggestion. I'll look into it. My start date may fluctuate, so I am hesitant to use contacts because I may need to leave the temp work earlier than planned if the firm comes calling. I don't want to burn bridges.

I doubt a headhunter would talk to you as you have no work experience and unemployed 1st year attorneys are no difficult to find... but heck, worth a shot I guess.

As for burning bridges... just be clear about what you are looking for.

Really, getting a job through people you know is the best way to go about it.
