so what is the real scoop - is it all who you know (professor x willing to call) or do applications really make a difference?

I am pretty sure I got my clerkship because a professor called the judge.

Clerking for a state appellate judge. The application got the interview, but a phone call from former summer employer (judge) probably helped. TTT, top 10%, LR ed board.

I had an interview with a USDC judge early in the cycle (April) based on application alone. I didn't participate in the federal hiring plan, but some friends in the top 5% (and LR) got interviews with USDC, maggies, and USBC. One USDC offer and one USBC offer. The USDC offer was a combination of application and phone call (and from knowing this guy's creds and personality, I doubt the phone call made much of a difference). Not sure about the bankruptcy guy, but I'm fairly certain all the other USDC interviews were based solely on the application.
