Minority Job Fair Question

Post by haberbe » Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:32 pm

Here's a question... I applied to go to a Minority Job Fair around the time school ended. When I applied, they did not ask what my minority status was, and did not really mention this aspect of it at all. I just received an email saying that they want me to come in for an interview.

Here is the rub.... I am about as far from a minority applicant as you can get. I am a plain old white male. Perhaps I have a diverse background and such (second career, 7 years as an engineer, etc.), but I am not a minority in the truest sense of the word. What do I do? Do I accept and go anyway, and try to sell myself as diverse (if I think hard enough, I am sure i can justify it somehow)? Will the interviewer be upset the see whitey walk through the door?

what do you guys think?

I think maybe if you want to be a lawyer you should stop lying.

That's the point... I never lied. They didn't ask in the application, and I sent in this application concurrent with a slew of other job fair applications.

Also, I appreciate the "Witey flame" comment... as always, helpful and informative

When you applied, did you not notice it was a Minority job fair, with emphasis on the word "minority"? What made you think you were a minority when you applied?

If I were you, I would call and cancel your interview, but there might be some punishments your school has for this (like you cannot participate in future interviews etc.).

Minority job fairs are not only for people of color. You are certainly welcome to attend and of course there would be no penalties for doing so. It may or may not be a complete waste of your time and theirs.

I gotta go with Kohinoor on this one. It may be poor form but you are certainly allowed to participate in the job fair.
