I'm depressed. OCI is going to suck this fall. I just missed top 25%, and granted, while I made LR, I feel like i have 0% chance of getting any offers. I am compiling a list of firms to bombard with CLs and resumes next month.

All 0Ls in this thread need to click the thread I linked. This is what happened to "everything is going to be okay!" trolls when they become 1Ls and 2Ls!

Re: It's time we all be honest
TLS is pretty depressing, and I'm sure that it is as bad out there as everyone (3Ls, etc.,) says it is... I come on here and leave needing a prescription for xanax (which, frankly, is just plain stupid, as I'm probably in a better position than most in my year (due purely to serendipity and not any special talents, e.g., LS grades.)) It makes me tend to want to run around to the 0Ls screaming, "save yourselves...it's not too late!"
On the other hand, I've lived through some pretty tough times, both personally and historically (being ancient and all) and think that while things are pretty awful, and may even get worse, it's not the apocalypse, and people always need lawyers. It may be that the Big Law model changes -- maybe it should -- it probably was unsustainable, like a lot of things (see, e.g., most of the dot-com start-ups.) I'm constantly torn between believing people should minimize their debt by taking good scholarships and and telling people who get into a T14 with no money to take the risk. I do think, however, that if, as a 0L, you're truly not committed to being a lawyer, even if that means you actually have to work for it and not have it handed to you a la 2004 OCI, you should walk away now. While law school is a breeze (academically, socially, psychologically) for some people, for most it can be fairly difficult on all those levels in the best of economic times -- the pressure added by a shit economy should be a game changer for many.

Rumor is that 20% of HLS struck out at OCI. Yeah, it is that bad.howcani111 wrote:your at northwestern? is it THAT bad? now that is scary....on_ne_sait_jamais wrote:We're screwed...

Wow, I can't believe I actually wrote that... Depression just increased exponentially... and yes I go to Northwestern, and yes I'm significantly above median, and judging by the OCI callback median gpa increases from 07-08 to 08-09, I'm still still screwed.steve_nash wrote:depressingmallard wrote:All 0Ls in this thread need to click the thread I linked. edit for HLS post: I wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if that strike out rate at HLS was actually higher.

Significantly above median at NU you should be fine. You might not get a V100 firm, but I would hardly call this screwed. Keep in mind the median at NU is like 3.4 or something I think. Still I would think anything above a 3.6 would put you in the top 1/3 and you'd be pretty safe. If this does not describe you, time to panic.Anonymous User wrote:Wow, I can't believe I actually wrote that... median is 3.3 and 3.6 is about 1/3 and you're correct that in 07-08 a 3.6 was a ticket to the promise land, but judging by the 08-09' data, I have no idea what happened to the rising 3L's. When the callback medians are 3.8-3.9 at V50's... that means that the same 25 people were getting callbacks: What happened to the other 200???

Re: It's time we all be honest
If the median is 3.8, then there are many people below 3.8 getting callbacks. The people at the very top can only take one job each, and so my guess is that offers were probably often made below 3.8. If 30% of NU students got jobs through OCI last year, then this almost has to be true.on_ne_sait_jamais wrote:Tome wrote:

(I have heard different figures: I heard 60% from somewhere, but I have also heard 30%. If 60% got jobs through OCI, it is even more likely. Then again, if you wanted the most elite firms, you are SOL. But, still, $125,000/year is hardly screwed.)
