W&M 0L interested in working in Miami
Fellow TLSers-
I finished my cycle and ended up with an $8,000 a yr scholly to W&M with in-state tuition. I want to work in Miami, but was scared of attending any school in FL bc of their rank. I got into Emory and UGA, but their career services didnt show much promise to reach Miami (little if any grads going that far south) and Emory's price tag was too high. Therefore, I took the safe option with money and went to W&M. W&M doesnt have much influence in FL, but Im wondering if it is more bc of self-selection. Therefore, I have a few questions. Can a W&M grad make it to Miami w/o having to be top 10%? What can I do at the outset to find career prospects in that area?
Thanks!

You got into W&M, but didn't bother applying to UF because of it's rank?

Yeah, it was 2nd tier, shallow i guess but I wanted to be on the safe side for acceptances. I didnt apply anywhere past UGA.

definitely shallow, outside of the T-14 UF and Miami have the easiest time getting jobs in Miami. It's a local market.Anonymous User wrote:Yeah, it was 2nd tier, shallow i guess but I wanted to be on the safe side for acceptances. I didnt apply anywhere past UGA.

Establish connections ASAP. Try to get a 1L summer job there. Without connections, expect to be unsuccessful. It's not worth going to without close to a full scholarship, and at this point they're probably out of money.Anonymous User wrote:well damn. worth applying to Miami now? They have a 7/31 deadline. . . I have a 3.6 and 165.

Emory would have probably been your best option, but again, no connections. Plus Emory's not worth sticker.
Oh well, have fun in VA.

Don't take what people here say about this too seriously. There is no way we just happen to have a bunch of experts on your school's chances in that market. It is always harder to get into a city with no connections, and going to school there creates a connection. Why do you want to be in Miami?

You can reapply to UF and UM in the fall. Did you not get the memo about regionality outside the T14?

You disagreed with above comments, then agreed with them. Thanks for this gem.Person wrote:Don't take what people here say about this too seriously. Wow. Wow. Wow.
This is rankings-whoring at its worst. You want to practice in Miami but you didn't apply to UF or Miami, and instead have decided to matriculate at a decent regional T1 hundreds of miles away? Are you insane? You could have gone to UF for almost nothing.

Tbf, W&M has 63 US News points while University of Florida only has 57. That six point difference means chosing UF over W&M would be like someone chosing to go to WUSTL over Vanderbilt. Obviously 6 points is a vast chasm.romothesavior wrote:Wow. Wow. Wow.

Egregious, horrific, heinous, hateful, beyond-any-and-all-comprehension anti-romothesavior trolling.holydonkey wrote:Tbf, W&M has 63 US News points while University of Florida only has 57. Obviously W&M is a better school, but not by such a large margin that you can justify going there on a small scholarship over the best school in the state you want to practice in for ~free.

What about schools so TTT you actually have to include the city where they are located in the name?Matthies wrote:I've never been a big fan of schools with two first namesromothesavior wrote:Egregious, horrific, heinous, hateful, beyond-any-and-all-comprehension anti-romothesavior trolling.holydonkey wrote:Tbf, W&M has 63 US News points while University of Florida only has 57. lol. If it makes you feel better, I went to GW for undergrad and the other day I was speaking with a prospective client who asked where I went. When I said George Washington, he said "oh, that's such a good school. I've always wanted to live in St. Louis." I explained that I went to GW in DC and he said "oh, hmm, never heard of that."romothesavior wrote:What about schools so TTT you actually have to include the city where they are located in the name?Matthies wrote:I've never been a big fan of schools with two first namesromothesavior wrote:Egregious, horrific, heinous, hateful, beyond-any-and-all-comprehension anti-romothesavior trolling.holydonkey wrote:Tbf, W&M has 63 US News points while University of Florida only has 57. Re: W&M 0L interested in working in Miami
Makes me feel a bit better since it was a good story, but I'm still upset by the harassment of those who picked WUSTL over Vandy.
TBF for me, I want to practice in St. Louis and WUSTL was cheaper. I fully recognize Vandy is a better school, but just not in my particular case. In OP's case, Florida would have been cheaper and there is not a great chance that W&M will get him back to Florida without top grades.
But if you went and talked to Dean Z for me, I could just go to Michigan. K thanks!
