Cleary NYC Diversity Reception?
Cleary is holding a NYC Diversity reception for student's of color next month. I was sent the invitation via a listserve that I am on. I'm a 0L, who will be starting law school at NYU Law in August. Is there any point in me attending this event? Will it help me at all with landing a job for 1L summer?

There's probably free food and booze.

TITCR and the reason to go. If you're going to really booze it up, though, use a fake name.mallard wrote:There's probably free food and booze.

I love free food and booze. But from a professional stand point, is there even a point? I'm beginning 1L in August so I'm not sure how much of a difference this would make. Then again I might be able to network with someone that can help me out when it comes to the 2L job search.

It probably won't make much difference. That said, do you have anything better to do?
Go, schmooze, pick up visit cards, drop names of people you've 'had great conversations with' come your 1L OCI interview. And have free dinnner.

Thanks. Thats sounds great and probably what I'll do. A dress code isn't specified. Should I wear a full suit or just dress pants and a button down?dresden doll wrote:It probably won't make much difference. That said, do you have anything better to do?

Also, does anyone know if Cleary hired any 1Ls this current summer?

I somewhat disagree, given that receptions I have gone to required no more than business casual. It's much better to be overdressed than undressed, however. Thus, if in doubt, go for the full suit.mallard wrote:Full suit.
I am fairly certain that Cleary did hire some 1Ls this summer. I know WLRK did.

Re: Cleary NYC Diversity Reception?
Cleary typically won't hire 1Ls except as part of various diversity programs. I know of one candidate from Yale Law School with very impressive private equity work experience who ended up at Wachtell 2L summer and was personally friendly with a Cleary partner who wasn't even given a screening interview for 1L summer due to Cleary's policy of not hiring 1Ls. This was back when the economy was booming. So basically they don't hire 1Ls full stop.
That said, some summers Cleary does hire 1Ls through certain diversity programs sponsored by New York bar associations.

So basically you're saying there's no point in me going to this Diversity reception?Anonymous User wrote:Cleary typically won't hire 1Ls except as part of various diversity programs. Well, it's been noted that Cleary hires 1Ls through a diversity initiative. You've been invited to a diversity reception.

Exactly. Assuming you were invited to the reception because you are diverse, you have a small shot at being hired as a 1L. Otherwise, Cleary does not hire 1Ls no matter your credentials.

Re: Cleary NYC Diversity Reception?
I worked at Cleary before law school. I've seen diverse 1Ls. Otherwise, no 1Ls. It's worth it if you're an interesting minority. I have mostly good things to say about the firm. The view will be nice. The food depends. And there's always alcohol in that office.
