I'm not doing anything substantive at my 1L legal job
Just sitting in a cubicle looking at Top-Law-Schools.com. Is this going to be a problem come interview time? I've got a recommendation from this place, but I just don't do any legal work (or any work for that matter).

Don't think it mattes too much. If you can't think of 30 seconds worth of material to make the job sound substantive, you will be in trouble in interviews in general. One thing that I have been told is a big no-no is being negative about your previous employement. Do not use your interview as an opportunity to complain. No matter how useless your current job is, it will just make you look like a complainer if you go negative. Meanwhile, enjoy the time on TLS!

Re: I'm not doing anything substantive at my 1L legal job
I felt I wasn't getting enough substantive legal work, so I paid attention to what my boss was working on and just mentioned when she was doing something I was familiar with. I just said something like, "Earlier I saw you were working on _____, I dealt extensively with that in undergrad/law school if you need any assistance." I no longer have a problem. Speak up.

They don't give 1Ls substantive legal work during their first summers. Sit back and enjoy surfing the net.

Probably not, but if you could get good experience, it would be beneficial to you in the long run.Anonymous User wrote:Just sitting in a cubicle looking at Top-Law-Schools.com. Who's 'they'? Seems like most people i know get to write some memos at least. Dunno if youd consider it substantive but its more substantive than surfing the net.truthypants wrote:They don't give 1Ls substantive legal work during their first summers. Sit back and enjoy surfing the net.

During my 1L summer internship at the DA, I got to write an appellate brief submitted to the court.Aeroplane wrote:Who's 'they'? Seems like most people i know get to write some memos at least. Yah, at my firm the 1L summer associates get exactly the same work as the 2L summer associates.Aeroplane wrote:Who's 'they'? Seems like most people i know get to write some memos at least. Speak for yourself. I've been working on a motherf---er of an assignment that is, frankly, way out of my league.truthypants wrote:They don't give 1Ls substantive legal work during their first summers. Sit back and enjoy surfing the net.

Just make sure you do at least two substantive things over the summer. You'll almost never have to describe more than two experiences from a single job in an interview.

This (basically). I work on projects everyday and have had my hand in some very important crap that I'm not so sure about, haha. The attorneys basically treat interns like "take it or leave it. Do well or we won't ask you back." It's pretty intimidating tbh.Renzo wrote:Speak for yourself.
