What would a URM need to do to swing WLRK?
-T10 that Wachtell doesn't OCI at
What would the URM's minimum qualifications need to be? Also, how would he go about securing an interview for an SA position?

the thing is, if they were interested, they would come to OCI. they ain't interested. T6 has URMs and their class size is so tiny and exclusive and highly sought after they have no motivation to dip down. APNS alone will meet their diversity goal.

I can't speak to the hiring standards at Wachtell; sealocust certainly knows better than I. That said, I went to high school with a current associate at Wachtell and I'm fairly certain he had no background in finance. IIRC, pretty generic lib arts major --> Yale Law.
Additionally, I know a girl from my undergrad who summered there. She's completely unremarkable. For what it's worth.

They have SAs from Howard every once in a while, so apparently they aren't getting their complete fix from the t-6.

Once they hire me they'll meet all of their requirements.

Got it.thesealocust wrote:Attorneys at Wachtell from:D Brooks wrote:Texas and UCLA too.TheBigMediocre wrote:They have SAs from Howard every once in a while, so apparently they aren't getting their complete fix from the t-6.
UCLA: 1 (Joined 9 years after graduating from law school as Counsel)
UVA: 2 (Both are Counsel, neither are recent graduates. One got an NYU LLM 17 years after UVA law)
Texas: 1 (Spent 12 years working after law school and before becoming - you guessed it - of Counsel)
NYU: 13 partners, 17 associates, 4 of Counsel
Seriously... it's not that UVA is a bad school (we do much better at, say, Williams & Connolly than NYU does) and it's not impossible to get hired by them (if for some reason you absolutely shine coming out of law school or bring something to the table as a lateral long down the road). But the answer to the question "What would an URM's minimum qualifications have to be in order to get a 2L SA with Wachtell from UVA" is "An URM cannot, in the normal course of events, get a 2L SA with Wachtell from UVA. It is as such farcical to speculate about any hypothetical minimum threshold of qualifications."

What are the benefits to lateraling into an Of Counsel position? You figure WLRK wouldn't take on someone who wasn't good enough to make partner-track someplace else, so why would a partner give up profit sharing for a salary?
I'm probably oversimplifying this.

if you get a baller clerkship or similar position, it would be worth throwing them a resume.

"Notwithstanding our preference to hire lawyers who have been with us as summer associates, we do consider attorneys, including judicial law clerks, who have not spent a summer with us." (WLRK)thesealocust wrote:What? WLRK attorneys I'm sure sometimes do clerkships, but they're not a lit firm. Tons of their hires don't even have law review. A "baller clerkship" wouldn't really qualify you for what they do. Of course, it never hurts to apply - but not all legal hiring places the same emphasis on various accomplishments / trajectories. The obvious parallel is W&C, where a clerkship is frequently a de facto requirement.DavidYurman85 wrote:if you get a baller clerkship or similar position, it would be worth throwing them a resume.
I didn't say they were a lit...only that it would be "worth" it - considering the above statement. OP asked 'what would he need to do'. OP can't change his UG, WE, or LS, so a baller clerkship seems like one of the only other options that would make him slightly competitive.
