OP, you are my GPA twin, except for the last decimal place!
I've been struggling with this ranking thing in the past week, too. FYI, there is a "class ranking letter" by Dean B. on the clerkship webpage, and it contains detailed GPA info for the graduating classes of 05-09. For 1Ls, I think the cutoffs should be slightly lower, for reasons that we all know. I was told that 3.4 = top 1/3, and median is probably 3.25 - but that's purely anecdotal.

3.13 to 3.25.
Realistically, it's pretty much always 3.23.

Your estimation sounds legit but leans towards the optimistic side - I thought it would be top 40%. May I know how you figured that out? thanks!thesealocust wrote:Top third.

My guess is it's top 35% worst case scenario. I did bucketloads of normalized curve ranking math wizardry last semester, I can eyeball it now, especially for schools where I know the general spread.
Except Northwestern. I don't and never will understand that school's fucking curve.
My bad. How could I forget you being the math / statistics guy in that thread! You rendered my economics PhD friend useless

Thanks for the patience, dude.

I think it's around top 35% or so...what's your bidding strategy? I'm around top 1/3 too and have no idea where to bid.

ok I know this is obnoxious, but what about a 3.716 after 1L? I know that's probably top 10% after graduation due to the clerkship guidelines, but what about after 1L year? and could someone explain how to calculate this?

Look at Dean Baum's memo under Clerkship resources.

NYAssociate wrote:For Top Third (IMO) (these are all NYC offices):
Reaches (I wouldn't devote too many bids to these):
Paul Weiss
Simpson Thacher
Skadden (Wildcard firm: Because the summer class sizes are so small... this place is just too hard to predict IMO)
Kirkland & Ellis (Wildcard. Personality is huge here)
Gibson Dunn (Wild card. See K&E above)
Targets:
Shearman & Sterling
Akin Gump
Jones Day (Wild Card)
Milbank
Ropes
Dewey
Weil
Sidley
Hughes Hubbard (Wildcard)
Fried Frank
Linklaters
Freshfields
Allen & Overy
Safeties (insofar as they're easier to get than the targets... there aren't really any safeties ITE)
Mayer
Schulte
Stroock
OMM
Winston & Strawn
Dechert
White & Case
Kramer Levin (Wildcard)
Kaye Scholer
This is so good. Thanks!
