Consequences of rescinding on state supreme court judge?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jun 07, 2010 8:55 pm

State court applications are going on now (or should have already gone out). So what if I end up with an interview, and an offer at a state supreme court where I'm okay with working (say, e.g., Alaska), but prefer to be elsewhere, and then during the federal clerkship hiring plan I get an offer from a federal judge. To take it one step further, what if the offer comes from a highly preferable state (say, e.g.. EDNY). Is there any negative consequences to rescinding from the state supreme court judge? ... I can't think of any reason I would ever need to go back to, e.g., Alaska, and I can't really think of much that my school could do at this point as a 3L, and obviously EDNY would be the hands down more prestigious and career boosting clerkship. Thoughts?

This will generally get you blackballed from your law school forever. This will also put you in enormous shit with the "better" judge if he finds you did this - and the odds he'll find out (say, from the very pissed off state supreme court judge) are quite high.

This would be tantamount to professional seppuku. Don't do it.
