Looks and firm life
So during my (excessive) free time at work this summer I've been reading up on different aspects of legal hiring and working in the legal field. I've come across many articles regarding attractiveness and dress in the workplace; points in and comments on the articles suggested several things that kind of surprised me:
- Attractive women are usually at a disadvantage because people assume their looks helped them get to their position. They are taken less seriously by male partners and treated poorly by older female partners/associates.
- Petite women are not taken seriously.
- Wearing anything but very conservative clothing is a no-no. (Some reasoning included it's disrespectful to the workplace because it will tempt male associates?!!!)
Now, I'm not Megan Fox-hot, but I'm definitely above average by most people's standards. I'm also 5'0 and <100 lbs and have a 'young' voice and face. I wear makeup (not a lot or crazy colors), v-necks, shorter skirts (about 1-3 inches above the knee), and I would never dream of going to work in heels shorter than 3 inches. I assume good grades will make this irrelevant in hiring, but what about once I'm at the firm? Can I expect to not be taken seriously/ be sexually harassed all day/ have older female associates hate me if I dress/look this way? (Probably TX, CA (LA), or NYC market)

I'm all for more beautiful women around the workplace. Though, I would ask you to understand that if you wear a low-cut top or short skirt, don't blame us if we sneak a peek

Attractive women are always going to have problems with other women, and some offices might be more frat-housey than others, but generally speaking, the legal field is probably going more sensitive than most.

Megan Fox is not hot. If you're worse looking than her, you could show up naked and I would ignore you. Or barf.

I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to firm life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.

Hey, mods can you just merge this with any given thread on 4chan? Seems to be the vibe I'm getting.
