updated grades for SA position
i will be a summer associate at a large firm this summer. unfortunately, i think i did pretty bad this semester and my gpa will go down... do firms ask for updated transcripts at the end of summer before making decisions on offers? or are those decisions going to be based primarily on how i did over the summer??
thanks
thanks

thanks for the reply... that makes me a lot less nervous (haven't got grades back yet but just felt much worse coming out of exams this semester than any other). sorry for being a newbie, but what does IIRC stand for??
thanks!
thanks!

My firm asked for grades. I think most firms ask for them. However, I think very few actually consider them much or at all, because your work during the summer is much more relevant.

My firm for the summer wants an updated official transcript in July. Take from that what you will.Anonymous User wrote:i will be a summer associate at a large firm this summer. unfortunately, i think i did pretty bad this semester and my gpa will go down... do firms ask for updated transcripts at the end of summer before making decisions on offers? or are those decisions going to be based primarily on how i did over the summer??

The firm I work for wants your 1L grades before extending an offer after your 1L summer. I can't confirm that they look at the grades, but I would think that they do if they are requesting it.

Re: updated grades for SA position
my wild guess is that it won't matter much.
firms that want to give close to 100% offers probably will still do so. some of those firms had HUGE summer classes and still offered 100%. no way all those guys kept their grades up.
and firms that give 99% offers...well you always hear anecdotally of one "worthless" SA in every class that every other SA knows...and those guys aren't sharing their grades. or someone who just lacks any social graces whatsoever.
for firms giving mostly offers (let's say 80%+), i'd still think that the work you do this summer and your enthusiasm for the job will matter a lot more.
for firms massively no-offering (50%-), well they probably are scrambling to find non-random ways to decide who to no-offer. it's one thing to know who the bottom 10% are in terms of work-product, and another to rank every member of the class. deciding offers based on grades is better to deciding them based on nothing i suppose.
thoughts?

Re: updated grades for SA position
My firm requested that I send in an updated transcript at the end of the summer. However, one of my friends who worked at the same firm last summer told me his grades went down quite a bit, but it had no effect on whether he got an offer (he did).

Yep, the firm may ask for an updated transcript after the summer is over.
