I am a OL attending law school in the fall. I am currently working for a company that is in the same field that I eventually want to practice law in (i think..). I have been with the company for 2.5 years, and I am debating whether to quit a few months before classes start.
I want to quit bc I hate the job (underpaid, EXTREMELY overworked, ethical concerns), i would like to see my family a bit, and i would honestly just like some time to relax and prepare for law school.
However, if i leave early my boss will be quite upset with me bc the summer is when we generate the most business. When I first told my boss I was going to law school, he asked if I would stick around for Jun-Sep and I told him i would (i actually meant it at the time, and I think he would have fired me then if i said no). I know that if i leave this job early, I will burn any bridges I have with him and lose future recommendations. It also seems a little silly to put in over 2 years just to throw it away in the last few months
So my question - will i be shooting myself in the foot if i quit? I never want to work for this company again, but I will want to work in the same field and I am not sure how important the recommendation will be - especially for my 1L summer.
Also, how important would you say it is to enjoy your summer? Is it a really bad idea to work super long hours right before heading to law school? (on the order of 100-120hrs/wk) How important is it to prepare/read stuff before starting?

0L Disclaimer
I'd probably quit because your 1L grades are going to matter much more than whatever weight his letter of recommendation would carry. I wouldn't want to attempt 1L while burnt out from 100 hour weeks. That said, if quitting ends up being the right decision for you, let your boss know ASAP to be considerate and minimize the damage.

100 hour weeks?! Get out of there! Pretend it's for health reasons if you have to.
