Help me get to the SEC
Background: HLS 0L hoping to get a job with the SEC after graduation. How well do I need to perform in law school to do this? What sorts of hoops (law review, particular summer jobs, publication, whatever) are necessary for me to jump through to do it?

The SEC is known more for football than for hoops.

You might want to begin by looking at their website. And never ask an SEC interviewer a question when you can easily find the answer on your own.
If you're set on a career goal, you're going to want to start with a summer gig. This will help you (1) learn more about the job so you can be sure it's right for you, and (2) establish a name for yourself within the organization. The SEC has a summer program, a volunteer program, and an advanced commitment program. I have a master of accounting and am very close to finishing the CPA exam. Last week, I interviewed for the summer honors program at the DC office-- I'll be peeing in my pants if I am chosen. Bottom line: aside from being smart, can you point to specific reasons why you identify with the SEC's mission?
As far as entry level attorney positions with the SEC, there are very few. The advanced commitment program is one way to get in, although I don't think every office hires this way. As far as I know, most SEC attorneys worked elsewhere after law school, be it at a law firm, accounting firm, or other regulatory agency (aka FINRA). The relevance and significance of an experienced candidate's post law school work is going to be weighed far more heavily than their law review or TA position.
Do some research, young padawan. Good luck.

I was told that last week was the final week of interviews. The SEC has been my ultimate dream for awhile now. I'm wishing and praying with every ounce of faith in my body that I see you in DC!!Danteshek wrote:nightlight- I'm amazed they are still interviewing. Maybe I'll see you in DC.

Good luck! Don't lose faith if you don't make it this year. Sounds like you have some of the stuff they are looking for.nightlight wrote:I was told that last week was the final week of interviews.
