MUST DECIDE IN THE NEXT FEW HOURS!!!

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Apr 06, 2010 1:50 pm

For a summer 2L...i'm working as a law clerk at a law firm. However, i also got an internship with a state's AGs office. Is it a good idea to split the summer and experience both or would that take substance away from the firm job.

I'm an 0L, but I have to imagine that it has something to do with your career goals. What do those look like?

I'd stick with the firm job for the whole summer and do an externship with the AG's office during the school year.

What kind of law firm is it? Is it the type of think that would lead to a full time offer?

Yes, its with a decent sized firm. The attorney there said i have a great chance at working there after summer but doesn't mind if i do the AGs office. This is just in terms of how it looks to have a split summer. Is it worth the extra line on the resume of working at the AGs office to have a split summer? Or does it take away from a decent law clerk job at a reputable firm?

I want to eventually either work at a firm or do a clerkship.

If you're serious about getting an offer from the law firm after graduation, I'd stick with just the firm this summer

It depends on the state and the firm.

Firm job all summer, and make damn sure they have no reason to not give you an offer. As far as resume building goes: Employment at a firm upon graduation >>>> Half Summer Interning with State AG.

Go away. I love you, and you'll make a fine law student, and we're all a family, but you really have no idea what you're talking about - and when the 0Ls start doing it en mass, it gets REALLY annoying.

Not trying to jump down your throat, just realize that you're being unhelpful :P

Isn't the common mantra, "dont split summers"?

That seems to be the advice given on the SA-compiled "What to know" thread.

There's a pretty big difference between splitting between 2 firms that might give you a permanent offer and splitting between a firm and somewhere else that likely won't. It's still not ideal in the eyes of many firms, no doubt, but the general 'don't even think about splitting ITE' advice is with respect to dual firm 2L summers.

i don't really see why. still less dedication to your firm. still easy to stand out (in a negative way) come evaluation time. ok you're not waffling between firms...but you're waffling between two entirely different jobs now

ITE, you have to do everything in your power to get an offer. you might goof on an assignment or be awkward at a social function. stuff happens. but for something like this, FULLY within your control, imho you'd be an idiot to split the summer

get an externship or a clinic for the school year to scratch your government itch

You need to rethink how you approach this. Ask that attorney, "Do you think working at the AGs office will give me unique experience or skills that would be valuable here at this firm?" In other words, you're asking him how you can be a better candidate for the firm job you really want. If he says "no" then don't split. If he says "yes" then split and every now and then let the people at the firm know what you're learning and how you hope to add it to the firm.

You can split and still seem SUPER interested in one of the positions.
