Take whatever you can get at this point, IMO.

If still aiming for private practice, consider working at a nonprofit in your market of choice that has private practice attorneys sitting on their board and/or would be willing to assist you in the job hunt over the summer. A lot of smaller organizations don't even think about hiring legal interns until you knock on their door offering free help for a few months (I know this because it's how we've been landing work for 2Ls at Vandy). And coming from a top school they will be happy to have you and willing to negotiate.

Basically, do something that will give you three months of contacts, networking opportunities and informational interviews and try to nail something down before the near-extinct 3L OCI rolls around. We've been encouraging enviro 2Ls to apply to land trusts in different cities, making it clear before accepting the job that they're also looking for help in securing fulltime employment in addition to on-the-job training. There's a person in my class who managed to land a job ITE this past summer by going that route... spent the whole summer leaving work early to attend meet-and-greets with the assistance and approval of her employer.

You're smart enough to get into a top program and you did well enough in school to keep yourself employable... now you just need to get someone to like you enough over the summer to hire you. Also, run this by your career services and let me know whether or not it's a stupid idea. We are still in the beta phase of testing.

Have you read Guerrilla Tactics yet?

And don't beat yourself up! Do some affirmations in the mirror. The Secret. Hypnosis.

...

I'm only half joking.

There are still a ton of really good government jobs, trust me. I thought I was screwed as well, but in the past 2 weeks received offers or callbacks from basically everything non-firm I wanted, and managed to get my first choice sight-unseen based on my grades/resume.

Just spend an entire day calling around to anything, and then use the summer to network. I'd recommend hitting your hometown or any secondary you enjoy. You'll get something on school name alone.

I've seen a lot of people in your position @ my CN school - I was there until recently - gets really frustrating - I assume you haven't exactly thrown your heart and soul into the job search after striking out at OCI, but then again you might have. My roommate remains jobless w/ similar grades as you, and that individual was close to honors 1L year - New York is a fucked up summer legal internship market - there are too many goddamn law schools in the area, and we get the influx of kids from everywhere around as well. You'll hear random ass public interest organizations telling you that they had "thousands" of applications and hired their class in October from Harvard. Start hitting up the small PI orgs, it's getting really late and govt. jobs are getting snapped up - leave the area, just do something so the summer doesn't screw you. pslawnet.org is helpful.

I just want to point out that above median at CCN was hardly guaranteed a job at OCI last time around. The economy really fucking sucks, if you haven't noticed.
