2L, (lower)tier 1, top 20%;
I'm afraid of taking the DOJ intern position because I have a sinking feeling I will wind up in mid to shit law. Does working over the summer in mid to shit law look better to a future employer than the DOJ intern position? There is some hope of future employment at the midlaw firm, and I don't think I'll make it into the DOJ honors program after graduation. Really my question is which is better for future employment.

What type of midlaw are we talking about. NLJ 250 in a secondary market, or just a mid sized law firm.

what if it's shit law (insurance defense)? To make it clear, I have a bunch of interviews lined up, including the DOJ, but have no offers. DOJ seems tough to get, but not much help if I can't make it into the DOJ honors program.

Whatever is most likely to result in a permanent offer. That would put USAO at the very bottom of my list.

I don't get it, you're all over the place with this post. If this is a true midlaw SA you should have an excellent shot at post-grad employment with the firm and you should be making an excellent salary during the summer.
The fact that you are entertaining being an intern over that makes me think this midlaw SA is not actually a midlaw SA. Care to elaborate/clarify?
Finally, if it is a traditional midlaw SA, you should be very proud and/or feel lucky to get it being top 20% lower tier 1.
