know a homeless man with a JD (it's bad out there)

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Mar 05, 2010 7:36 am

don't want to out my school (it's tier 1), but figured i'd let people know the *worst* case scenario for law school. At my school, there is a homeless man that comes into the law library to sleep (tier 1 school-not t14, though). Sad thing is, he is an alumnus of the law school (graduated with his JD I want to say early 2000s?). Told me he couldn't keep up with the bar fees, lost his job, it was game over when ITE hit. Hopefully the legal market turns around...

pics of him in the library, in a condition that makes it clear that he's homeless and not just a scraggly college student, and his diploma?

There is a homeless man in DC near the Capitol who went to Cooley. He didn't graduate though, just attended. When I worked at a firm near the Hill last spring, one of the research associates would stop and talk to him a lot. I can't remember his name but he has a website that he updates once every few months. It's full of conspiracy theories.

Anyway, the moral of the story is that the majority of homeless people are mentally ill. You can be mentally ill despite having gotten a JD (some might argue that you're more likely to be mentally ill if you want one!).

Edit: Just so you don't think I'm flaming since I said he went to Cooley, here's an article about him from The Hill: http://thehill.com/capital-living/47337 ... n-the-hill

The above poster is right. There are people from all walks of life who end up homeless. In the washington post article linked above, it mentions that the man had a bad run of depression that essentially ruined his life. I don't know why the OP cares to point this out, most likely there is someone out there who went to YHS who is now homeless.

I'd be willing to bet this person would be in the same predicament with or without a JD. Homelessness is usually due to severe personality disorders or mental illness, as above poster mentioned. Obviously I don't know this particular person, but if they are telling you the truth (not just trying to avoid being ejected from campus by pretending to have something in common with students), I'm certain that there is something else (other than not being able to find legal employment with his T-1 JD) that has led him down this path.
