Advances on Summer Associate Pay
I've seen that many firms offer incoming associates an optional advance on their pay, presumably to help with the costs of moving to a new city and getting ready to work at a firm. Is this practice unheard of for Summer Associates (perhaps an advance on a week or two's worth of pay)? Many of us will have to secure places in new, expensive cities and others will have to purchase some type of wardrobe appropriate for the work environment we'll be in at these places. Any insight from those who have already summered or current 2Ls who have heard from their firm about this would be much appreciated.

+1, but a risk-proof way to find out is to ask your career office. If they've never heard of it then definitely don't ask.Renzo wrote:TTT-LS wrote:I've never heard of it, and I wouldn't make such a request in a million zillion years.

Every time that I believe that I have seen it all, something surprises me on this site.Renzo wrote:TTT-LS wrote:I've never heard of it, and I wouldn't make such a request in a million zillion years.
Oftentimes, I believe it's just the same users over and over again posting either anonymously or through a different tls.com name (it's not like the mods would know).
However this is one of those few times that I kind-of believe that it's not a "flame."
OP, if you ask that, you deserve any and everything that happens to you.

[OP]: First, the mods would know. They see who posts anonymously, they know the ip addresses or flames/trolls.Aberzombie1892 wrote:Anonymous User wrote:I've seen that many firms offer incoming associates an optional advance on their pay, presumably to help with the costs of moving to a new city and getting ready to work at a firm. Thanks for your input, TTT. I didn't think it was common for firms to offer their incoming summer associates some pay early as some firms do with incoming 1st year associates, but had heard one friend whose firm had offered exactly that to incoming summer associates and wanted to see if the practice was perhaps more common than I thought. I certainly would not request such a thing from the firm, but were it offered out to incoming summer associates I certainly wouldn't be upset

Aberzombie, thanks for your helpful input in the legal employment forum, with your vast knowledge of benefits law firms offer incoming SAs. Good luck on those applications.

I know for a fact that some firms do offer advances on summer associate pay. They will let you know if they offer, though. If they don't offer, don't ask!

Because everyone that uses TLS pays mad $$$ for a static IP address..Anonymous User wrote:[OP]: First, the mods would know. They see who posts anonymously, they know the ip addresses or flames/trolls.

am a 3L now...the firm I summered at last year in NYC allowed SAs to get a several thousand dollar advance approximately one month prior to starting.
