US Attorney's Office
To those of you who received offers from the USAO in NY, how soon after your interview did you hear?

As a side note, what kind of class ranking is required at a lower Tier1 to gain summer employment/intern/externship as well as post-graduation employment at the USAO?

for the NY State Attorney General, it says applicants need to be in top 20%. I'd assume this is similar.

Re: US Attorney's Office
I'm curious about this as well. I interviewed a couple days ago with the USAO SDNY and was told we'd hear back sometime in March...not very specific. It seems like they've already made some offers though
For these interviews, they didn't even look at grades. I think previous experience in a prosecutor's office (did victim/witness services for Philly DA) was what got me the interview.

Re: US Attorney's Office
Just got back from my interview at a USAO (not in NY though). How did everyone's interview go? Mine started off well and then I felt like there were a few awkward pauses when the interview was wrapping up. I felt like they really didn't ask too many questions and it wasn't at all what I expected. They kind of just looked at my resume and asked a few things about jobs and school. Part of me feels like they weren't that interested and the other part thinks that it was just Friday and they were tired and ready to go home for the weekend.
Anyone out there that got an interview and was rejected? This is something I really wanted and I'm hoping I came off as eager to learn, work, and get experience and not just desperate. They said they'd try to make decisions by the end of the month. I'm a 1L now and I'm really nervous because this office is in the city I want to work in and I'd be able to not only get great experience but probably network for my 2L job while there too. I tried not to be nervous and stay calm. For the most part I think I did but there were a couple of awkward moments where I could tell they knew I was nervous.

Several of my classmates have offers from the EDNY, and they interviewed 3 weeks ago (about). Haven't heard of any offers from the SDNY yet.

EDNY Crim participated in CLS OCI this Tuesday. I heard that several of my classmates who interviewed received offers on Wednesday and Thursday.
SDNY Crim/Civil and EDNY Civil were there on Thursday. No news on those fronts yet.

Median T30 - got a major city USAO job. For me, it was all about work experience, then didn't care much about my grades. I heard within 2 days of being interviewed via mail.Anonymous User wrote:As a side note, what kind of class ranking is required at a lower Tier1 to gain summer employment/intern/externship as well as post-graduation employment at the USAO?

I heard the EDNY Crim gives offers very quickly, often the same or next day. They also don't wait for grades either, according to a friend.

if you're talking NYC, maybe if you're #1 at yale and a SCOTUS clerk, you can work at USAO right away after graduation. EDNY or SNDY.Anonymous User wrote:As a side note, what kind of class ranking is required at a lower Tier1 to gain summer employment/intern/externship as well as post-graduation employment at the USAO?

Re: US Attorney's Office
I had a question about a USAO internship position for this summer. I have an offer from the USAO in DC, deadline for acceptance is, well, tomorrow. I also have an offer from a nonprofit in their legal department...I know everyone says that it doesn't matter what you do 1L summer as long as it's legal, but that being said, if I am planning to hopefully do BigLaw next year, which position will look better? Also I interviewed with the USAO SDNY yesterday, who is hopefully going to get back to me before my Thursday deadline for DC. Do you think that since I told them about my pending offer in the DC USAO, that will make any difference in their hiring decision?
Thanks!

Even major nonprofits probably aren't going to expose you to the litigation process as well as the USAO. A good portion of Biglaw work is defending suits by the USAO. Experience in the enemy's camp sounds like a real Biglaw resume booster to me.Anonymous User wrote:I had a question about a USAO internship position for this summer. What about for the 1L internship? Based on the responses so far, it's either really easy or reasonably hard.underdawg wrote:if you're talking NYC, maybe if you're #1 at yale and a SCOTUS clerk, you can work at USAO right away after graduation. has the USAO of SDNY made offers yet?
If an offer is not made from the EDNY within a few days, is that equivalent to a no?

Re: US Attorney's Office
I'm the one who posted earlier about USAO in DC -- thanks for your advice about that vs. the non-profit. I just had a more general question I suppose about USAO's as a whole, and then perhaps about the DC office, if anyone is familar with it. Is it generally seen as prestigious to be offered an internship there? IE -- prestigious enough to move to DC for the summer? Reason I'm asking is career services at my school is useless and won't give me an answer when I ask if it's worth moving 10 weeks down to DC for. If working at that office was something that was really going to give me an extra boost for OCI next year, I'd accept it, but that said, I would hope the prestige of it would outweigh the actual costs.

Re: US Attorney's Office
usao summer jobs don't lead to full time offers, so they aren't super duper hard. i still wouldn't think it'd be really easy though...so i'd venture "reasonably hard"SweetnessUVA wrote:What about for the 1L internship? Does anyone here know how strict they are with their drug policy? They said any illegal drug use within the past 12 months is an automatic disqualification for summer interns. What, if any, measures do they take to enforce that?

Semi-Tangent: Anyone who's interested in a USAO job should definitely readConvictions by former AUSA John Kroger. He spent a summer with the USAO in Boston, then got a job after graduation with EDNY. Lots of insight into AUSA work and the EDNY/SDNY.underdawg wrote:if you're talking NYC, maybe if you're #1 at yale and a SCOTUS clerk, you can work at USAO right away after graduation. Re: US Attorney's Office
USAO DC and SDNY came to my school in DC for OCI. I landed both, chose SDNY. I heard one week after SDNY that I got it - that was around 2/10. I heard two weeks after my USAO DC interview, on 2/17. If you applied to the program directly, then maybe the timeframe is different than for OCI. I'm a 1L, if that helps at all, and clearly new to this online board, but happy to answer any questions.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
