USAO Interview?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:23 am

I have a interview with the USAO for summer internship. Has anyone here done a summer internship position with the USAO? If so is there any advice on how to do the interview? How different is it from other interviews like law firm interviews? I am just a 1L so I have only done few interviews so far and would like advice. Also do grades matter? I have top 25% grades at a T17 school. They did not ask for my grades. Am I supposed to tell them during the interview?

I am actually working for the USAO this summer (unless for some reason I go crazy and change my mind). I would offer you advice on what to do during the interview, but I didn't have one. Besides, every office is different. What would be good advice for one might get you passed over by the other. I would just treat it like pretty much every other interview.

On the subject of grades I think I can be more helpful. My USAO asked for my transcript, yours I guess did not. You obviously want to let them know you did well. If you applied before you grades came out, I would send them a note letting them know that you have received your fall grades and would be willing to give them a copy of your transcript and an updated resume before the interview. If you applied after grades came out, then hopefully your GPA was already on your resume.

Good luck!

I worked at the USAO last summer (after 1L), and my interview was pretty standard. As the previous poster mentioned, I think different offices are probably going to conduct interviews differently. However, I would say that one of the most imporant things would be to stress your strength in legal research and writing, and at least be able to articulate an interest in a certain group (fraud/white collar, organized crime/narcotics, violent crimes, etc.).

As for grades, I would definitely take above poster's advice and try to get them to your interviewer before hand if possible. I don't know which office you are interviewing for, but it is generally very competitive. All of the interns at my office last summer had similar stats- top schools and/or top 25% or higher.

Good luck!

I'm a 1L and I also have an interview at a USAO that I'd love to work at this summer. Not sure how I got the interview because my grades are just alright and I go to a T2 state school right outside T1. I'm definitely going to prepare for the interview as much as possible because it's something I really want but I hope I have a shot and it's not just a waste of my time. Any tips on what to expect or what to focus on?
