What are my chances? NYU 1L
I got a B, B, and B+ in the fall. I have two questions.
Does anyone know where this places me relative to the rest of the class?
Assuming that I get similar grades this semester (I don't know how I can really improve), what are my chances of getting a job at OCI this summer with a NY firm that pays market salary?

As a 1L, not good... but you never know. Try some secondary markets for 1L. I am sure you'll have a solid 2L OCI in new york.

This is the OP. I'm sorry I wasn't clear in my first post. I know I won't get a firm job for this summer. I was asking about OCI for 2L summer. I am really nervous and people are telling me I will have no shot. I hope they're as clueless as I am.gglr24 wrote:As a 1L, not good... but you never know. Try some secondary markets for 1L. Re: What are my chances? NYU 1L
well, according to OCS, 80% of 2Ls summered with a firm last year, 82% of those being very large/extra large, 8% large, 4% medium, 3% small, and 3% size unknown. So take from that what you will...13% of 2Ls summered with PI, so I imagine those are generally kids that don't want to work at a firm (though maybe they were forced into PI, who knows). Anyways, I think if you pull yourself to top 60%, you'll be good for getting a big firm job, dunno about NYC but most of us work here so potentially.
but most importantly, you're like bottom 1/4 right now probably. so just work on your GPA this semester and hope for the best.

I am pretty sure NYU has around a B+ median... idk how I remember that. So you are prolly around 60 percentile? The true elite firms or those with small hiring classes may indeed be out of reach unless you improve next semester. I still think you have a decent chance at market rate firms. You do go to NYU.
Also, if you are willing to get out of NY, secondary markets should be a pretty easy move for you if you have some connections.

Another NYU 1L...is there any way to figure out where one falls in the class when there are no ranks/gpa cutoffs...

NYU 1L here.
From talking w/ upperclassmen, median GPA is roughly 3.2 which equates to B+, B+, B (ish). I was also told that anyone w/ a 3.4+ has nothing to worry about (if you don't only bid on V10 firms and don't have a terrible personality).
Although you are slightly below that, you can definitely bring it up this semester. Also, I think it's also important to be strategic when you big. If you are smart w/ your bids and aim at the less prestigious/smaller firms, you should be okay. I probably wouldn't waste bids on firms that have a (high) GPA cutoff.

I am at another top school that doesn't rank. The best I can say is to get some good letters of recommendation from your professors. Sometimes, your raw score puts you a point or two away from the next grade, but the professors are constrained by the curve to not bump you up to the A or A-. Get the letters to backup your first semester. I don't think you're screwed. I think it's people trying to psych you out. Sure, maybe the top ten firms MIGHT (and that's a big might) be out of the question, but there are 40 other firms in the Vault 50 worth exploring. Just sayin'.
EDIT - the previous post about being strategic with your bids is right on the money. Flashback to law school apps - don't focus too much on firms that are out of reach, b/c you'll end up possibly with fewer offers. Meet with your career office and do some research on good targets for your grades. Also, remember it's more than just grades...not sure if there's a GPA cutoff for bidding at NYU, but if not, then you're in a good position to have people make an impression of you based on personality / character / resume / background experiences as well.

This is very true from what I've heard....a 2L fried said that everyone he knew that wanted a firm gig got one as long as they went about it in a sensible way.Anonymous User wrote:NYU 1L here.

I may try and go, but since my curiosity is piqued, have any clue what rank a 3.67 is?

Re: What are my chances? NYU 1L
hey 3.67 is me too! I'm pretty sure that it's top 10% (honors cutoffs for last year were 3.53 for top 25% and 3.61 for top 10%). However, we've got to keep in mind that though the new grading system was already in place for last year, 2Ls that received honors designations had 1 year of grades under the old system and one year under the new, easier system.
So potentially a 3.67 is no longer top 10%, but I kinda doubt that.
