Do law firms care about what electives you take during 1L?

Post by whyamihere » Sat Jan 02, 2010 7:02 pm

I'm torn between taking admin law (which everyone recommends as terribly important) and environmental law (which I have more of a personal interest in). Will firms care if I opt for environmental, or do they not really care about what electives people take?

How are you managing an elective during 1L year? I thought the standard academic classes and legal methods/research/writing makes a full schedule...

Firms probably won't care, but if there is a chance you might work in public interest this summer, take Admin Law.

From the interviews that I have alraedy had, firms really won't care as long as you have a story to tell as to why you are interested in taking that particular class. This semester, I will have 2 doctrinal classes, CLR, and 3 electives.

I used my 1L electives to demonstrate my interest in practice area(s). I took employment law and tax. It worked out: 1L Summer = employment law firm and 2L Summer = tax practice of a firm. That being said, take the courses that will help your GPA and develop a theme for interviews to explain your course selection.
