I'm not that original anon, but I think conventional knowledge for GULC students is that bidding solely DC is extremely risky (except for maybe those within the top 5-10%), and bidding NY/DC is even still pretty risky. It's a gamble even if you have good grades, because DC SA classes are smaller, the market is more competitive, and you're competing with tons of people for way fewer spots.

That being said, lots of GULC students get SAs in DC every year.

This is very credited; DC can be a complete crapshoot. I was top 5%, bid DC only, got 15+ screeners, and ended up with 3 cbs and only 1 offer. To be competitive in DC you need a combination of top grades, great interviewing skills, and if possible good connections (which can compensate to an extent for less than adequate grades or interviewing skills). It was a lot more difficult/nerve-wracking than I thought it was going to be.

Bidding DC is risky from GULC. Last year I was in top 5%, got 14 screeners, 5 callbacks, but had connections at 2 of those which lead to offers (and I canceled my remaining callbacks right after). Without those connections it would've been a crapshoot - I'd probably have gotten an offer from somewhere decent in DC, but I wouldn't recommend other people do what I did.

And EIW is super stressful for everyone - even top grades don't guarantee you a damn thing.

I bid completely DC. Median grades, no journal. Not a urm.
Had 7 callbacks and multiple offers. Ymmv.

Yeah, I was the anon who started this line of questioning and had an experience more like yours. I know I was lucky to pull this off in DC, but I worked hard to step up my interviewing game and hustled my ass off all summer. TLS definitely put the fear of god in me, which was good motivation to go above and beyond, and that's probably what made the difference.

Would you mind sharing where on the V100 you ended up?
- Offers spanned from V20-V80, likely going with a V30..

- Another piece of advice (for however much/little its worth), Vault is terrible. Sooner you realize that, the sooner you can begin targeting firms that correspond with your general interests/background (those firms are likely to also be more interested in you). You're more likely (assuming this is somebody's goal) to become AGC at Cerberus (or some other alt investment fund) after 3-4 years at SRZ (V79) than at Gibson Dunn (V11).

- Slightly related: I am sure there are people who bid DC only and are successful. I'm pretty sure you have to walk into your interviews with no pants on to be top 10% and not end up with at least half a dozen DC offers. That being said, NY is a bigger market, with bigger SA classes, and NY transactional practice groups continue to be bolstered by the current macro backdrop.

- Regardless, I think the worst advice i heard all year was "it doesnt matter what you do with 1L summer, as long as its legally related." Im sure working for a judge is chill if you have a 3.7, but there are people who are more targeted with their 1L summer and it helps significantly in terms of knowledge, connections, demonstrated interest, etc..

Agree with most of the above advice, except the jab at working for a judge. Especially if you can swing a federal judge internship, it looks great and at least in my experience has been a huge positive in interviews. Again though, as with most of this advice, it may be different for you, and if you want like real estate or something, it could definitely help to be in a job that is tailored to that during 1L summer.

It's all about prepping for interviews and spinning your experiences to fit with the firm. Grades only get you so far.

Not sure what you think interning for a judge is about, but maybe you should stick to giving advice about your own experiences..

I had 13 screeners, 4 CBs and 1 offer (V20 in Bos) so far. I only bid Boston and DC. I'm still waiting to hear back from the other 3 firms i had callbacks with. There is hope!!

I'm planning to go. I think it is worth going if you are still uncertain. It's like a having a second visit/look except in a much more casual setting than at the office. You can check out more people from the firm and see who might join you as summer associates. Even if you are certain that you will accept, you can still go to meet other people at the firm that you might work with later on. It's always good to network in an environment where there's none of the "i'm trying to get a job" (like those awkward 1L receptions) because you already have an offer.

Is it safe to assume that if you've gone two weeks without hearing something after a cb that you are on a waitlist?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
