I know there was a rumor about Covington DC, can anyone confirm they've made CB's? Same goes for A&P DC, has anyone heard?

DC rocked me. I'm top 20% or so, no LR, and only have one DC callback (split with NY where I was only mildly more successful).

The problem is that there is a set of people from each market who are top performers, and they bid on the same firms in the secondary market. It's the same people getting the callbacks each time.

If you're a Stone Scholar from a secondary market, you're set. If you're median or even above, sorry.

If I could do it over again, I would bid all New York.

you don't need to know that much about the firm, but it always helps. just be well prepared for Why firm X and come with a lot of questions about the firm.

I've been on a couple already, and although it varies a lot by interviewer, I definitely have been asked more substantive, interview-type questions. For example, I've been asked why I have an interest in doing corporate law, what my strengths are, and why I am interested in the particular firm. I've also been asked more follow-up questions than at the screening stage (i.e., I'd give an answer and be asked "what appeals to you about that?").
I also think that at the CB stage interviewers are going to expect you to have a lot more questions. I've had more than a couple interviews start with, "What can I tell you about the firm?" or "What do you want to talk about?"
I would say that having a lot of questions about the firm (even if they are mostly the generic questions that could apply to a lot of firms) is the most important thing you can do to prepare, as well as really knowing whether you want to do corp or lit, or, if you're undecided, what interests you about either practice and why you think either might appeal to you.
