does an invited interview have more weight than an on-campus interview won through a bidding process? I assume yes, but want to test the waters

like everything else it depends, but getting an interview is certainly not a bad sign. holds no weight for either if you dont do anything with it though, so really drill down your interviewing and dont sweat minutiae like this. good luck

lol the big 3 r wachtell, S&C, Cravath. everybody and their mom works at skadden. skaddens 1L program is probably the biggest program in the entire country. Not prestigious at all. Not going to disclose identity bc i am currently in Skadden's process.

I'm the HLS 1L in the other thread who's royally screwed. I'm guessing I'm out at any bigtime firm (e.g., like the above poster mentions, Skadden) I've applied to when they request grades.

How does my 1L job hunt change from here? I haven't looked to public interest stuff at all since I view those as "if it's public interest then I'm only gonna get my school's summer funding so it doesn't really matter which particular public interest organization it's with).

As I mentioned in the other thread, I'm chasing a few leads in consulting/finance (mostly midtiers with a few high-end outliers). I have virtually no leads with inhouse depts and I was thinking about applying to them but I'd guess they're somewhere between firms and consulting/finance in terms of how likely they are to auto-reject me upon seeing my grades.

Unless you qualify for diversity programs (and some in-house programs are diversity programs), I think at this point you need to sign up for the SPIF auction, do public interest this summer, and keep networking for EIP.

Who cares, go for all diversity programs. But you should still make sure you get your SPIF 3 hours in to qualify just in case. I imagine by the end of February they should have all the paying jobs determined (pulling that date out of the sky)

Oh heck no. No way I'm Fred. But it's not exactly comforting to learn that I'm actually worse than Fred. No, I have fewer Hs and more LPs than Fred, if you can even imagine that. That's at least bottom third/quartile/quintile, not even close to median after 1 semester.

Hence why I think I'm screwed and why I'm wondering whether my approach should change for my 1L summer

I think you should definitely do SPIF stuff etc, but keep doing firm apps. Worst they can say is no, and it'll look good that you applied come EIP.

For what it's worth, I'd rather have your grades at SIP than be Fred at SIP.

Several callbacks in December and early January. No word from any of them. Firms are probably waiting for their top choices to accept/decline, so am I safe to assume that I am effectively waitlisted at this point?

In my experience, firms tell you they will let you know something in 1-2 weeks.
I don't think following up after the 2 week mark is a bad thing.
