Have to bid very conservatively, aka firms that have much lower medians than your GPA, and then go in and absolutely nail interviews.

Yup - Chicago's brutal this year. Killing it in a (desirable) secondary market; barely getting in the door with Chi firms. Thankful for the former, but prefer the latter.

I'm having about a 50% screener to CB success rate in New York, and I completely struck out in Chicago. This is with ties too.

Only firms have yet to hear (+/-) from are Jones Day/Kirkland (Chicago). Have to be dings, correct?

There are really competitive people (3.7+, LR, good UG degrees etc) who are good interviewers (based on conversion rates outside chicago) completely missing or almost completely missing at Jenner, Kirkland, Sidley and Mayer (which is a huge chunk of the chi SA market).

it seems like sidley and jenner especially have only called back exteremely competitive candidates as far as i've heard (which is limited data). Anyone care to elaborate or dispute?

Top 10% non-LR with dings at Mayer, Sidley, and Jenner. Welp! Batting perfect in NYC. Bid nyc.

Why does it seem like Chicago is such a blood bath this year? Is the legal market here contracting, or is it like this every year?

It's like this every year. The Chicago market just isn't as big as nyc, so there are less jobs. My guess is that it's not actually any worse this year (and probably a little bit better) but you don't realize that your shiny 3.6 doesn't mean much in Chicago until this point.
