3.41 (is that like top third? not sure)
6 preselects in CA
9 alternates in CA
3 preselects in NY
4 alternates in NY
Strong ties to CA, no ties to NY.
Any others bid on CA? I'd love to talk strategy...

Nope... I know a few mid 3.7's who got callbacks.Cavalier wrote:Last year I believe everyone they called back had north of a 3.8.Anonymous User wrote:Anyone happen to know the lowest GPA that Cravath has given a callback to in recent years? I got a preselect with them but I'm thinking with my sub 3.6 GPA I'd be better off declining, even if it meant ending up with an alternate instead (I have slightly less than 20 preselects but over a dozen alternates, so I think I'd still end up with the max interviews). Thoughts?

+1. I was told I was right around their CB average, too. Due to either bad luck or good bidding strategy, only 1 of my top 10 and 5 of my top 20 have preselected me.Anonymous User wrote:Damn u shearmanAnonymous User wrote:shearmans out

If a v50 firm gives you a callback, and your gpa is way below median, are they really interested in hiring you?

That is what I thought, seems like if you can be likable, and enthusiastic and have an interesting resume, you have as good a chance as anyone once you reach the callback stage.Anonymous User wrote:Yes. They are.Anonymous User wrote:If a v50 firm gives you a callback, and your gpa is way below median, are they really interested in hiring you?
I've spoken with a number of hiring partners and recruiting committee members at many firms. A resounding chorus is that they hate using proxies such as law school and grades for hiring decisions.
All else being equal, they want smart and hard working people, but they know that grades and school are a very flawed proxy for those attributes.
School allegiance comes in both because of perceived quality/reputation but also because partners want to hire from the schools they went to, so that one can be harder to budge.
But on grades, it's quite rare that firms are actually making fine distinctions based on them, and it definitely happens that exceptions slip through. It's very hard for something on your resume or a personal interaction in a 20 minute interview everyone prepares for the same way to impress somebody, but if it does, you'll get the nod over somebody with the grades. And callbacks are quite expensive for the firm: An our of market firm offering a callback is pouring a lot of resources into you between your costs and the time attorneys give up to do interviews. They're very serious about them.
To throw a bit of data at you, last year Dean Donovan told us explicitly that median/average GPAs for those who got offers from a firm are often lower than for those who got callbacks.
Grades will matter at the callback stage because the thumbs up or thumbs down will come as people look at your interview reports + resume, but they won't matter nearly as much and you have every chance of getting hired once you have a CB.

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
So basically if you get a lottery interview and the firm typically has a GPA average around your GPA it is possible that you fell through the cracks that they didn't actively not want you and therefore should treat it as a good chance at a callback?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
I would definitely think so, unless the rest of the people they are interviewing are LR or top 10% people, I think if they like you, then they see your grades are in their range, you should be able to get a callback for sure. From what I have seen, its not as much a cut and dry process as it is organized chaos, just make sure you don't slip through the cracks from this point forward and be proactive.Anonymous User wrote:So basically if you get a lottery interview and the firm typically has a GPA average around your GPA it is possible that you fell through the cracks that they didn't actively not want you and therefore should treat it as a good chance at a callback?
